In late June Caspe travels back to the Middle Ages, re-enacting the historic 1412 Compromise of Caspe with over thirty local actors. It is a Festival of Tourist Interest of Aragon.
Caspe, located in the province of Zaragoza, is a town of outstanding historical significance, best known for the 'Compromise of Caspe' in 1412. In that year, representatives from Aragon, Catalonia, and Valencia met here to peacefully choose a new king, thereby avoiding a civil war. The town is situated on the shores of the Ebro reservoir, also known as the 'Sea of Aragon' (Mar de Aragón), a paradise for anglers and water sports enthusiasts. Its most important buildings include the Collegiate Church of Santa María la Mayor, a Gothic masterpiece, and the remains of the castle of the Knights Hospitaller, who once ruled the area. The surrounding region also features prehistoric rock paintings that are part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. Caspe's economy is currently driven by a mix of agriculture, particularly olive and fruit cultivation, and growing tourism along the Ebro.
