💡 Tips
- The heart of the town is the fishing port. Visit in the late afternoon to see the boats return, and enjoy the lively atmosphere in the evening.
- The Gothic church of Santa María de la Asunción is memorable from all angles. Walk all the way around it to admire the architecture and sea views.
- Pay attention to the tides. The landscape around the Roman-era pier and beaches changes dramatically between high and low tide.
- For a lovely walk, follow the coastal path 'Paseo Marítimo' towards Brazomar beach.
- The town is best explored on foot. Park your car on the outskirts and enjoy the narrow streets of the old fishermen's quarter.
🍽 Food
Grilled sea bream is the local speciality. Look for an 'asador' (grill restaurant) near the port that serves fresh fish of the day.
Snails in a spicy sauce. A unique local dish for adventurous eaters, served in traditional 'bodegas'.
Fresh mussels, often served simply steamed with lemon. Get a portion from one of the stands or bars in the port area.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Visit the town's covered market to see the impressive display of fresh seafood, as well as local cheeses and cured meats.
In the old town's lanes, you'll find small shops selling high-quality canned fish ('conservas') and other Cantabrian products.
The area around the Santa María church and the Santa Ana castle features a quiet atmosphere and striking views of the cliffs and sea.
Located to the west of the town centre, this beach is often quieter than the main Brazomar beach.
Climb up to the lighthouse and the small chapel. It's a short but steep walk rewarded with peace and a fantastic vantage point.

Castro Urdiales, located in eastern Cantabria, combines the elegance of a modern resort with the rugged history of an ancient seafaring nation. The town's silhouette is dominated by the monumental Church of Santa María de la Asunción, a 13th-century masterpiece of Cantabrian Gothic architecture. Right next to it stands the Castle of Santa Ana, which houses a lighthouse integrated into its walls to guide ships into the bustling port. This combination of sacred building, fortress, and lighthouse on a cliff overlooking the sea is one of the most photographed ensembles in Northern Spain. The town has Roman roots as Flaviobriga, and remains of this era can still be seen in the Archaeological Museum. A stroll through the old town passes fishing houses with wooden balconies and leads to the town hall square with its arcades. The port is the heart of the town, where fresh fish is landed daily and turned into local specialties like Marmitako. For beach lovers, Playa de Ostende and Playa de Brazomar offer crystal-clear water and golden sands. The proximity to Bilbao (only about 30 km away) makes Castro Urdiales a popular destination for day-trippers, but the town deserves a longer stay to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and coastal hiking trails. The medieval bridge connecting the old town to the port area is particularly impressive. In summer, numerous festivals liven up the streets, including the traditional 'Coso Blanco' with its light and flower shows.
