💡 Tips

  • Park at the entrance to the village and explore on foot. The village is small and the streets are very narrow, making driving a challenge.
  • The village is a maze of blue alleys. Wear comfortable shoes and enjoy getting lost, discovering the Smurf statues and murals as you go.
  • On a sunny day, the intense blue of the buildings can be very bright. Sunglasses are essential to protect your eyes.
  • Júzcar is located in the Serranía de Ronda mountains. The access roads are winding but scenic, so allow more time for your journey than you might expect.
  • Although it's famous as the 'Smurf Village', it also has a rich history of chestnut harvesting. Look out for local chestnut products in the autumn.

🍽 Food

🍽
Seasonal wild mushrooms ('Setas')

Try the local wild mushrooms, especially in autumn. You'll find them served in most tapas bars and restaurants in the area, often cooked simply with garlic and olive oil.

🍽
Migas

A traditional dish of fried breadcrumbs, often served with chorizo and peppers. Look for a traditional roadside restaurant ('venta') to find an authentic version.

🍽
Goat's cheese ('Queso de cabra')

The local goat's cheese is delicious. Enjoy it on its own or with a drizzle of local honey at a bar in the village centre.

🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots

🛍
Smurf Souvenirs

Naturally, you'll find an abundance of Smurf-related keepsakes in the small shops dotted around the main square.

🛍
Chestnut wood products

The region is famous for its chestnut forests. Look for handcrafted items made from local chestnut wood in the artisan shops.

🧘
Chestnut forest trails

Escape the crowds by following one of the hiking trails leading from the village into the surrounding chestnut woods ('castañares'). It's especially beautiful in autumn.

🧘
Júzcar Viewpoint ('Mirador')

Find the viewpoint at the edge of the village. It features a sweeping view of the Genal Valley and a peaceful spot to admire the unique landscape.

🧘
The upper alleyways

Simply walk uphill. The upper, less-frequented alleyways of the village offer a quieter atmosphere away from the main tourist drag.

Júzcar stands out dramatically from the typical White Villages of the Genal Valley. In 2011, Sony Pictures selected this traditionally whitewashed village for the premiere of the movie The Smurfs. As part of the promotion, locals agreed to paint every single building, including the church and town hall, a spirited shade of Smurf blue. The quirky makeover generated such an enormous boost in tourism that the residents later voted to keep the town blue permanently. Today, it is recognized globally as the first and only official Smurf Village. Walking through Júzcar is a surreal and playful experience, especially for families with children. The narrow streets are dotted with large fiberglass statues of popular characters like Papa Smurf and Smurfette, alongside giant mushroom houses and playful murals painted on the blue walls. Beyond the cartoon theme, the village organizes weekend craft markets, face-painting stations, and adventure activities like zip-lining over the colorful rooftops. Geographically, Júzcar is deeply hidden in the dense chestnut forests of the Serranía de Ronda. The drive is an adventure in itself, involving a very winding, narrow 30-minute descent from the main road near Ronda. Autumn is a spectacular time to visit, not only for the cooler weather but because the surrounding chestnut trees turn brilliant shades of gold and copper. This also coincides with the local harvest, where you can buy freshly roasted chestnuts in the village square.
