Gunsan
Gunsan is a living open-air museum that preserves the traces of Korea's eventful history at every street corner. The city at the estuary of the Geumgang River experienced rapid development in the early 20th century, leaving behind a rich legacy of Japanese colonial architecture. Today, Gunsan attracts visitors who want to experience the nostalgic atmosphere of old railroad tracks, historic residences, and long-standing traditional bakeries. The historic district houses the Hirotsu House, a well-preserved Japanese-style villa, and Dongguksa Temple, the only Japanese-style temple built in Korea. Another highlight is the Gyeongam-dong Railroad Village, where old tracks run through a narrow residential neighborhood, now revitalized with retro shops and photo spots. The Gunsan Modern History Museum provides the necessary context to understand the city's evolution from a small fishing village to a major export port. Culinary-wise, Gunsan is famous for its baking tradition, especially Lee Sung Dang Bakery, the oldest in the country. Visitors often line up to try the famous Anpan (bread with red bean filling). Proximity to the sea also guarantees excellent fish dishes and seafood variations served fresh in local restaurants. The region is also known for its high-quality rice products. Gunsan can be reached from Seoul in about three hours by bus or train. The city is best explored on foot in spring or autumn when mild weather invites long walks through historic alleys. For nature lovers, the nearby Seonyudo archipelago provides dramatic coastal landscapes and bridges connecting the islands, easily accessible by bike or car.
