Dangjin is a major port and industrial city on the northwest coast of Chungcheongnam-do province. In recent decades, it has transitioned from an agricultural region into one of South Korea's most vital centers for the steel industry, largely due to the expansion of Hyundai Steel's facilities. Historically, Dangjin is of great importance as the cradle of Korean Catholicism; the Solmoe Holy Ground marks the birthplace of Andrew Kim Taegon, the first Korean-born priest. Its coastal location led to the creation of the Sapgyoho Hamsang Park, a maritime park featuring decommissioned warships that serves as a popular tourist destination. Despite heavy industrialization, rice cultivation remains a cornerstone of the local economy. Dangjin continues to grow as a strategic gateway for maritime trade across the Yellow Sea and a modern urban hub.
