Table Mountain (South Africa)

Weather…

Table Mountain is the defining landmark of Cape Town, reaching an elevation of 1,085 meters at its highest point, Maclear's Beacon. The mountain is part of a large plateau made of resistant Table Mountain Sandstone, resting on a base of Cape Granite and Malmesbury shale. Formed approximately 260 million years ago, it is one of the oldest mountains in the world, predating the Andes and the Alps. Its flat-topped silhouette is frequently draped in an orographic cloud layer known as the 'tablecloth', created when moist winds are forced up the slopes. The mountain is a core part of the Cape Floral Kingdom, containing over 1,470 plant species, which is higher than the entire plant diversity of the British Isles. It is home to the unique fynbos biome and numerous endemic species like the Table Mountain ghost frog. Since 1929, a cableway has transported millions of visitors to the summit, offering panoramic views of Table Bay. In 2011, it was officially inaugurated as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Table Mountain is easily accessible from Cape Town, either via the cableway from the lower station or through various hiking trails such as Platteklip Gorge. Shuttle buses and taxis regularly connect the city center with the mountain access points.
📅
Best season
The best time to visit is during the summer months from November to March, when the weather is mostly dry and sunny. However, during strong winds, the cableway often ceases operation, so it is wise to check the weather forecast beforehand.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The summit plateau is largely flat and features well-maintained walking paths, while the ascents can be steep and rocky. Sure-footedness is required on the hiking trails, as they often lead over stone steps and uneven ground.
🎒
What to bring
Even in summer, you should bring a windproof and waterproof jacket, as the weather on the plateau can change abruptly. Sturdy shoes, sun protection, and plenty of water are essential for any activity on the mountain.
🅿️
Parking
Near the lower cableway station, there are limited parking spaces along the road that can fill up quickly. It is recommended to use public transport or ridesharing services to avoid the hassle of searching for parking at the mountain base.
⚠️
Safety
Never underestimate the danger of sudden fog (the 'tablecloth'), which can reduce visibility to zero. Always stay on marked paths and inform yourself about the hiking routes beforehand to avoid accidents in the steep terrain.
⏱️
Time needed
A visit via cableway typically takes about 2 to 3 hours, while a hike to the summit and back requires at least 4 to 6 hours. Many visitors stay longer on the plateau to enjoy the spectacular views of the city and the ocean.
