Rhodes Memorial (South Africa)

Weather…

Rhodes Memorial, situated on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain in Cape Town, is a grand monument dedicated to Cecil John Rhodes. Built between 1910 and 1912, it was erected on the very spot where Rhodes frequently spent time contemplating the landscape. Designed by the celebrated architect Sir Herbert Baker, the memorial is crafted in the neoclassical style of a Greek temple. A grand staircase, flanked by eight massive bronze lions, leads up to a powerful equestrian statue known as 'Physical Energy.' At the summit of the stairs, a bust of Rhodes is enshrined within a Doric-columned portico. The site has some of the most spectacular panoramic views across the Cape Flats toward the Hottentots Holland Mountains. In recent years, the memorial has been a focal point for political debate regarding Rhodes' colonial legacy, yet it remains a significant architectural landmark and a popular trailhead for hikers.
