Sutherland
Sutherland is a quiet town in the Great Karoo that has become a global destination for astronomy enthusiasts. It is home to the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), one of the largest optical telescopes in the Southern Hemisphere. Perched on a high plateau, the town enjoys exceptionally clear, dark skies, free from light pollution, making it an unparalleled spot for stargazing. Visitors can join guided tours of the observatory during the day and participate in public star-viewing sessions at night. The town itself is a characterful example of Karoo life, characterized by its wide streets and the imposing Dutch Reformed Church. Known as the coldest town in South Africa, it often receives snow in winter, transforming the landscape into a white wonderland. Local restaurants serve traditional Karoo cuisine, with succulent lamb being the regional specialty. Sutherland is accessible by road from Cape Town (about a 4-hour drive). The best time to visit for stargazing is during the winter months (June to August) when the air is driest and clearest.
