Cederberg Mountains (South Africa)

Weather…

The Cederberg Mountains are located about 200 kilometers north of Cape Town and are renowned for their dramatic sandstone formations and rugged wilderness. The range stretches for approximately 100 kilometers, with its highest peak, Sneeuberg, reaching an altitude of 2026 meters. The region is famous for its striking reddish rocks, sculpted into bizarre shapes by millions of years of wind and water erosion, as well as significant San rock art sites. Thousands of ancient paintings, some dating back over 6000 years, are found in caves and overhangs throughout the mountains. The range is named after the rare Clanwilliam cedar tree, an endangered species that is endemic to these high-altitude slopes. Economically, the Cederberg is the primary world producer of Rooibos tea, which thrives in the region's specific soil and microclimate. The entire area is part of the Cape Floral Kingdom and is designated as a wilderness area to protect its unique fynbos vegetation and elusive wildlife like the Cape leopard.
