Arniston
Arniston, also known as Waenhuiskrans, is a coastal village of extraordinary natural beauty and historical significance. Its most famous feature is the massive Waenhuiskrans Cave, a limestone sea cavern accessible only at low tide, named for its vast size which could supposedly accommodate an ox-wagon. The town is home to the 200-year-old Kassiesbaai fishing village, a protected national monument of lime-washed, thatched cottages. The coastline is characterized by striking turquoise waters and rolling white sand dunes, well-suited for exploration and landscape photography. The ocean here is rich in marine life, making it a favorite spot for rock and surf angling. Visitors can enjoy local hospitality and fresh seafood while overlooking the meeting point of rugged land and the warm Indian Ocean. For nature enthusiasts, Arniston gives excellent whale watching from June to November and peaceful hiking trails. The surrounding De Mond Nature Reserve provides additional opportunities for birding and solitude. Located about 3 hours from Cape Town, the village is best visited during the summer months (November to March), though its historical charm is timeless.
