The town was established in 1882 as the capital of the short-lived Boer Republic of Stellaland. Vryburg is strategically located on the main railway line connecting Cape Town to Zimbabwe, making it a vital logistical hub for agricultural commodities including maize, groundnuts, and sunflower seeds. Geographically, it is situated in a dry, flat savanna region that provides well-suited conditions for extensive livestock ranching.
