Pilanesberg
Pilanesberg National Park lies in a transition zone between the Kalahari Desert and the Bushveld, resulting in an exceptional variety of flora and fauna. The unique geology of the park, set within a massive alkaline ring complex of an extinct volcano, provides a fascinating backdrop for safaris. Visitors can spot the Big Five, lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino, in their natural environment. The park is well-developed and gives both guided safaris and self-drive options. Numerous watering holes are strategically placed to enhance wildlife viewing. The landscape is characterized by rocky hills, open valleys, and the central Mankwe Dam, which is a magnet for many animals. It is a paradise for bird lovers with over 300 registered species. Gastronomically, the various lodges and camps within the park offer everything from rustic meals to fine dining. The park is located right next to Sun City and can be reached from Johannesburg in about three hours. The best time for wildlife viewing is the dry winter (May to September), when animals gather around the watering holes.
