Rustenburg is situated at the foot of the Magaliesberg Mountains in the North West province and is recognized as one of the world's most significant centers for platinum mining. The city was founded in 1851 by Voortrekkers, making it one of the oldest European-established settlements in the former Boer republics of the north. Its economy is today heavily driven by the Bushveld Complex, a geological formation containing roughly 70 percent of the world's known platinum reserves. Rustenburg also played a strategic role during the Second Boer War, serving as the site of several battles in the surrounding rugged terrain. Beyond mining, the region is noted for its extensive citrus estates and tobacco industry, which benefit from fertile soils and a warm climate. The Royal Bafokeng Stadium in nearby Phokeng highlights the area's sporting prestige, being uniquely owned by the Royal Bafokeng Nation.
