Kaditshwene Ruins (South Africa)

Weather…

The ruins of Kaditshwene in the North West Province of South Africa mark the site of what was once the largest Iron Age stone-walled city in the country. Between 1400 and the early 1820s, Kaditshwene served as the capital of the Bahurutshe clan, a division of the Tswana people. At its peak in 1820, the population was estimated to be between 16,000 and 20,000 inhabitants, making it larger than contemporary Cape Town at that time. The city was renowned for its sophisticated dry-stone architecture, highly developed metalworking skills, and extensive grain production. The missionary John Campbell visited the site in 1820 and provided detailed records of its complex social hierarchy and architectural brilliance. However, during the Mfecane wars of the 1820s, the city was attacked and eventually abandoned. Today, the extensive stone walls stretching across several hills remain as a testament to the scale of this pre-colonial civilization. Archaeological studies have highlighted Kaditshwene's role as a major regional trading hub. It stands as a vital piece of Tswana cultural heritage and an important subject for research into African urbanization.
