Underberg
Underberg is the epitome of alpine beauty in South Africa. Set in the shadow of the Southern Drakensberg, the village is a hub for outdoor activities and farming. The most famous attraction is the Sani Pass, a spectacular 4x4 route that leads across the border into the highlands of Lesotho. At the top, visitors are welcomed by the 'highest pub in Africa' with panoramic views. The village itself exudes a peaceful, rural atmosphere. For nature lovers, Underberg gives excellent fly-fishing in crystal-clear rivers and dams. Hiking trails lead into the pristine mountain wilderness, where rare birds like the bearded vulture can be spotted. The region is also known for its cheese production and cozy country inns serving local produce. Travel is best done via the scenic roads from Pietermaritzburg. The best time to visit depends on preference: summer (December to February) is green and convenient for hiking, while winter (June to August) often brings snow to the peaks and is well-suited for cozy fireside evenings. Every Easter, the 'Splashy Fen' music festival takes place here, attracting thousands of visitors. Underberg is the good place for mountain lovers and adventurers.
