Rorke's Drift (South Africa)

Weather…

Rorke's Drift is renowned for the heroic defense of a small British mission station against a massive Zulu onslaught on January 22 and 23, 1879. Following the British disaster at Isandlwana, a Zulu force of approximately 3,000 to 4,000 warriors attacked the outpost, which was garrisoned by just 150 soldiers. Under the command of Lieutenants Chard and Bromhead, the defenders utilized mealie bags and biscuit boxes to construct makeshift fortifications. The intense close-quarters combat lasted for over twelve hours, resulting in a British victory despite overwhelming odds. An unprecedented eleven Victoria Crosses were awarded to the defenders, the highest number ever bestowed for a single engagement in British military history. Today, the site features a comprehensive museum, an art and craft center, and memorials to those who fell. Located near the Buffalo River in KwaZulu-Natal, the site gives a stark look at the resilience and tactical ingenuity displayed during the Anglo-Zulu War. It remains a key destination for military history enthusiasts worldwide.
