Majuba Hill (South Africa)

Weather…

Majuba Hill, located near Volksrust in KwaZulu-Natal, was the site of the most decisive battle of the First Boer War. On February 27, 1881, Boer forces achieved an impressive victory over the British Army, effectively ending the conflict. Despite being outnumbered and attacking uphill, the Boers managed to storm the British positions on the summit plateau, resulting in the death of the British commander, Major-General Sir George Pomeroy Colley. This humiliation forced the British government to sign the Pretoria Convention, which restored self-government to the South African Republic (Transvaal). The name Majuba became a powerful rallying cry for Boer nationalism, later used during the Second Boer War with the slogan 'Remember Majuba.' Today, the hill is a national heritage site and a popular destination for hikers and history enthusiasts. The steep climb to the top rewards visitors with expansive views of the surrounding battlefields and the Drakensberg mountain range. Monuments on the summit serve as a solemn reminder of the lives lost during this significant clash of empires.
