💡 Tips

  • Somaliland operates independently; you will need a separate visa for entry, usually obtainable in Addis Ababa or upon arrival.
  • Change some currency into Somaliland Shillings at the central market; money changers sit openly with massive blocks of cash.
  • Dress codes are strictly conservative; women must wear loose clothing and cover their hair.
  • Take a day trip to the ancient Laas Geel cave paintings; you must arrange an armed escort through the Ministry of Tourism.
  • Friday is the holy day; most shops and businesses will be closed.

Hargeisa is the capital and largest city of the internationally unrecognized Republic of Somaliland, located in northern Somalia. The city is situated in the Ogo Mountains at an elevation of approximately 1,300 meters above sea level, providing it with a more temperate climate than the hot coastal regions. After being almost completely destroyed by aerial bombardments in 1988 during the Somali Civil War, Hargeisa has been largely rebuilt through the efforts of its residents. Today, it stands as a peaceful hub for trade, education, and culture in the region. A prominent landmark in the city is the Civil War Memorial, featuring a downed MiG fighter jet that commemorates the city's destruction. Nearby are the famous Laas Geel cave paintings, which are among the most significant prehistoric finds in the Horn of Africa. The city serves as a major node for the livestock trade, which forms the economic backbone for the surrounding rural areas.
