Laas Geel Rock Art (Somalia)

Weather…

Laas Geel is an extraordinary complex of caves and rock shelters in Somaliland, housing some of the best-preserved Neolithic rock art in Africa. Discovered in 2002 by a French archaeological team, the paintings are estimated to date back between 5,000 and 9,000 BC. The artworks depict animated cows adorned with ceremonial robes, humans, dogs, and various wild animals, indicating an early pastoral society in the region. The colors, primarily shades of red, ochre, and white, have remained remarkably vivid due to the arid conditions and the sheltered positioning of the rock faces. Laas Geel is considered one of the most significant prehistoric monuments in the Horn of Africa, providing invaluable insights into the domestication of cattle. Despite its international significance, the site is not yet listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site due to Somaliland's lack of international recognition, yet it remains a major destination for researchers and tourists.
