Berbera is a historic and economically vital port city located on the Gulf of Aden in Somaliland. Since ancient times, it has been a crucial maritime hub, mentioned as Malao in the 1st-century Periplus of the Erythraean Sea. The city served as the capital of the British Somaliland protectorate from 1884 until 1941, when the administrative seat was moved to Hargeisa. Berbera’s urban landscape features a unique blend of Ottoman, Arab, and British colonial architecture, reflecting its long history as a crossroads of cultures. Today, the Port of Berbera is one of the most important deep-water facilities in the Horn of Africa, undergoing major expansions to serve as a primary trade corridor for landlocked Ethiopia. The city is also known for its harsh desert climate, with summer temperatures frequently exceeding 45 degrees Celsius, making it one of the hottest inhabited coastal areas in the world.
