Kennedy Memorial (Solomon Islands)

Weather…

The Kennedy Memorial on Kasolo Island, now widely known as 'Kennedy Island', commemorates one of the most famous survival stories of World War II. On the night of August 2, 1943, the motor torpedo boat PT-109, commanded by future U.S. President John F. Kennedy, was rammed and sunk by the Japanese destroyer Amagiri. Kennedy and his surviving crew members swam for hours to reach this tiny, uninhabited island, evading Japanese patrols in the surrounding Blackett Strait. Their eventual rescue was facilitated by two Solomon Islander scouts, Biuku Gasa and Eroni Kumana, who carried a message carved into a coconut shell to Allied forces. The monument on the island honors both Kennedy's leadership and the crucial role played by the local scouts. Today, the island is a popular spot for snorkeling and historical tours, offering visitors a chance to see the pristine environment where these events unfolded. The coconut used to deliver the SOS message is preserved today at the JFK Library in Boston, but the spirit of the event remains a cornerstone of local history and Pacific-American relations.
