Former St. Andrew's Mission Hospital (Singapore)

Weather…

The former St. Andrew's Mission Hospital on Erskine Road opened its doors in 1923 as Singapore’s first medical institution specifically dedicated to the healthcare of women and children. Founded by Dr. Charlotte Ferguson-Davie, the hospital was instrumental in providing accessible medical services and reducing infant mortality rates among the underprivileged during the early 20th century. The building's architecture features a blend of colonial and functional styles, designed to accommodate wards and clinics in a dense urban environment. During the 1930s economic slump, the hospital served as a lifeline for thousands of families in the Chinatown area. It faced immense challenges during the Japanese occupation but managed to continue its operations in a limited capacity. By the 1950s, the hospital expanded and moved to newer premises, leaving the Erskine Road building to be repurposed over several decades. Today, the structure has been meticulously restored and houses a boutique hotel, The Scarlet, while retaining its historic facade and unique character. It stands as a significant symbol of the evolution of social welfare and healthcare in Singapore.
