Former Keng Teck Whay Building (Singapore)

Weather…

The former Keng Teck Whay Building on Telok Ayer Street is a historic landmark and a prime example of Chinese clan architecture in Singapore, constructed between 1847 and 1875. It served as the headquarters for Keng Teck Whay, an exclusive mutual-aid society founded by 36 Hokkien merchants. The building is notable for its traditional construction techniques, utilizing mortise and tenon joints without the need for metal nails, and its rich facade decorations. A unique architectural feature is the octagonal pavilion on the roof, which reflects Southern Chinese styles and is rare among Singapore's historical structures. For over a century, the building was a hub for religious rites and significant social gatherings for the clan's members. In 2010, after a major restoration, the building was reopened as the Singapore Yu Huang Gong (Taoist Temple and Museum). It was gazetted as a National Monument in 2010, recognizing its immense historical and cultural value to the Chinese community's heritage.
