Bowyer Block (SGH) (Singapore)

Weather…

The Bowyer Block is a historic structure within the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) campus, officially opened in 1926. Built in the Neoclassical style, it is widely recognized for its prominent clock tower, which has served as a landmark for the hospital complex for nearly a century. The block was named in memory of Dr. John Herbert Bowyer, the Chief Medical Officer of the hospital who died in captivity at Changi during the Japanese occupation. The architectural design features high ceilings, wide colonnaded verandas, and large windows, reflecting the colonial practice of ensuring natural ventilation in tropical climates. Originally, it housed the first-class wards and administrative offices of the medical school. Today, the Bowyer Block is gazetted as a National Monument of Singapore and currently houses the SGH Museum, which showcases the history and development of healthcare in the nation. It stands as a testament to the resilience and progress of Singapore's medical heritage.
