Aride Island (Seychelles)

Weather…

Aride Island is the northernmost of the granitic Seychelles islands and is considered one of the most important nature reserves in the entire Indian Ocean. In 1973, the island was purchased by Christopher Cadbury for the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts and is currently managed by the Island Conservation Society (ICS). Aride hosts more seabirds than the other 40 granitic islands of the archipelago combined, including the world's largest colony of roseate terns and significant populations of frigatebirds. The island is also home to the world's only natural population of Wright's Gardenia, an extremely rare endemic shrub. In addition to its birdlife, Aride is known for its high density of reptiles, such as the Wright's Skink, which finds well-suited living conditions here. Since Aride is free of invasive predators like rats or cats, the original ecosystem has remained largely undisturbed. Visitors are only allowed to enter the island under strict supervision and during suitable weather conditions, as landing is often difficult due to strong surf. The waters around the island are designated as an official marine protected area, hosting an impressive variety of reef fish.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Access is typically arranged via guided boat tours departing from nearby islands like Praslin. The journey across the water requires favorable conditions.
📅
Best season
The most favorable months for a visit are usually between May and October, during the drier southeast trade winds. This period also generally aligns with peak seabird activity.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
Visitors can expect sandy landing spots and mostly flat coastal paths transitioning into gentle granitic elevations. The trails are generally well-kept but can be uneven in certain sections.
🎒
What to bring
It is highly recommended to bring reliable sun protection, plenty of drinking water, and insect repellent. Comfortable walking shoes and a pair of binoculars are essential for wildlife observation.
🅿️
Parking
As an isolated nature reserve, there are no parking facilities on the island itself. Vehicles must be left at the designated marina or harbor on the island from which your boat tour departs.
⚠️
Safety
Exercise typical caution when disembarking from the boats, as the surf can occasionally be unpredictable. Always respect the guidelines of the nature wardens to avoid disturbing the breeding colonies.
⏱️
Time needed
A typical guided exploration of the reserve usually spans around half a day. This timeframe allows for a leisurely pace along the paths and ample opportunities for observing the unique environment.
