Aldabra Atoll (Seychelles)

Weather…

Aldabra Atoll is the world's second-largest coral atoll, located over 1,100 kilometers southwest of the main island of Mahé. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1982 due to its extraordinary ecological significance. The atoll consists of four large coral islands encircling a massive central lagoon and is home to the world's largest population of giant tortoises, numbering over 150,000. Because of its remote location and difficult access, the ecosystem has remained largely pristine and untouched by human interference. Aldabra also hosts the last remaining flightless bird species in the Indian Ocean, the Aldabra rail. Scientific research is the primary activity on the atoll, and tourist access is strictly controlled and limited to ensure the long-term preservation of this fragile natural sanctuary.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Extremely restricted and exclusively accessible by chartered expedition vessels or specialized conservation flights; strict prior authorization from the Seychelles Islands Foundation is mandatory.
📅
Best season
The relatively dry season from May to November typically provides the calmest seas for the long ocean crossing and far more comfortable conditions for exploring the scorching coral terrain.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The geography consists primarily of razor-sharp, jagged uplifted coral limestone, dense coastal scrub, and sweeping mangrove mudflats that present significant physical navigational challenges.
🎒
What to bring
Heavy-duty walking shoes to protect against sharp coral, long lightweight trousers to ward off scratches, maximum UV protection, and fully self-sufficient water supplies are strictly required.
🅿️
Parking
Traditional parking is entirely non-existent on this remote atoll; vessels must carefully anchor in designated offshore marine zones meticulously managed by local environmental authorities.
⚠️
Safety
Visitors are accompanied by official rangers at all times; extraordinary caution is demanded due to extreme isolation, lack of medical facilities, and treacherous, unstable coral ground.
⏱️
Time needed
A visit is normally structured as a multi-day guided expedition due to the vast travel distance from the main islands and the extensive time required to responsibly observe the wildlife.
