Subotica, Serbia's northernmost city, is a virtual open-air museum of Hungarian Art Nouveau (Secession). The most impressive structure is the City Hall, built between 1908 and 1910, adorned with intricate Zsolnay ceramics and stained-glass windows. Equally spectacular is the Subotica Synagogue, one of Europe's largest and most beautiful, which has returned to its full glory after extensive restoration. The cityscape is also defined by the Raichle Palace, whose colorful facade and undulating lines are hallmarks of the Art Nouveau style. The city possesses a distinct multicultural identity where Serbian, Hungarian, and Croatian influences blend harmoniously. The pedestrian zone featuring the Blue Fountain serves as the central meeting point for locals and visitors alike. Just 8 kilometers from the center lies Palić Lake, a popular recreational area with historic villas, parks, and a zoo. Palić was a fashionable spa resort as early as the 19th century. Today, it gives sailing, beaches, and numerous restaurants serving local specialties like fish soup and wines from the sandy 'Sand region.' Its proximity to the Hungarian border makes Subotica a convenient stopover for travelers heading toward Central Europe.
