Langue de Barbarie National Park (Senegal)

Weather…

The Langue de Barbarie National Park is located in northwestern Senegal, about 18 kilometers south of Saint-Louis, encompassing a narrow sandy peninsula between the Atlantic Ocean and the Senegal River. Established in 1976, the park covers approximately 2,000 hectares of dunes, sandbars, and mangrove environments. It is a bird sanctuary of international importance, providing wintering grounds for thousands of migratory birds from Europe, such as flamingos, pelicans, and various species of terns. A pivotal moment in the park's history was the 2003 artificial breach of the sand spit, intended to protect Saint-Louis from flooding, which resulted in massive ecological shifts and severe coastal erosion. The original mouth of the Senegal River has since shifted significantly southward, and the increased salinity has altered the local flora and fauna. Despite these environmental challenges, the park remains a crucial habitat and a major destination for ecotourism in the region.
