The Dakar forest belt, also known as the Mbao Forest, is the largest remaining green space in the Senegalese capital region. Classified as a protected forest in 1940, it covers approximately 700 hectares and functions as the 'green lung' for the densely populated metropolitan area. It consists of various tree species, including eucalyptus, acacias, and palms, which actively contribute to air purification and noise reduction. The forest plays a crucial role in stabilizing coastal soils and prevents groundwater salinization in adjacent areas. Despite its ecological importance, the area is under significant pressure from uncontrolled urbanization, major infrastructure projects like the highway, and illegal waste dumping. Numerous bird species and small mammals find one of the last natural sanctuaries within the metropolitan region here. The preservation of this forest belt is a central objective of Senegalese environmental policy to combat urban heat island effects in the city.
