Pian di Gualdicciolo is one of the few flat plains in the otherwise mountainous Republic of San Marino, located in the far northwest in the municipality of Acquaviva. The area is traversed by the San Marino River, whose sediments have formed this fertile alluvial plain over time. Due to its level topography, Pian di Gualdicciolo has evolved into the state's most important industrial and commercial hub while maintaining its rural charm on the outskirts. The geological structure primarily consists of alluvial deposits and gravel, which facilitated the development of infrastructure. Historically, the plain was a major transit route for trade between San Marino and the Marecchia Valley in Romagna. The flat valley floor of Pian di Gualdicciolo is easily reached via the main arterial roads. Because this area also forms an important industrial zone, the road infrastructure for accessing it is excellent.
Best season
The valley is fully accessible year-round, as the paved paths and roads are weather-independent. Weekends are frequently much more pleasant for exploration, as the heavy industrial commuter traffic is significantly lower.

The terrain on the valley floor is completely flat and features a mix of natural fringes and heavily built-up industrial areas. The paths are mostly asphalted or firmly graveled, making them very easy to navigate.
What to bring
For a walk around the Gualdicciolo area, normal street shoes are absolutely sufficient. Due to the significant industrial usage, the air can be quite still and warm on hot days, so definitely carry some water.
