Palazzo Pubblico (San Marino)

Weather…

The Palazzo Pubblico is the official seat of the government of the Republic of San Marino, located on Piazza della Libertà in the historic city center. The current building was constructed between 1884 and 1894 following the designs of Roman architect Francesco Azzurri in a refined Neo-Gothic style. It stands on the site of the ancient "Domus Magna Communis," the original community hall dating back to the 14th century. The facade is adorned with the coats of arms of the republic's nine municipalities (Castelli) and is crowned by a distinctive clock tower. Inside, the Great and General Council Chamber (Sala del Consiglio) serves as the meeting place for the 60 members of parliament, featuring a monumental fresco by Emilio Retrosi depicting Saint Marinus. The Palazzo is the political heart of the nation, hosting official state visits and the biannual inauguration ceremonies of the Captains Regent. In front of the palace stands the Statue of Liberty, donated by Countess Otilia Heyroth Wagener in 1876 as a tribute to the republic's democratic traditions.
