Basilica di San Marino (San Marino)

Weather…

The Basilica di San Marino is the primary Catholic place of worship in the republic and serves as the co-cathedral of the Diocese of San Marino-Montefeltro. This Neoclassical structure was built between 1826 and 1838 on the site of an ancient 4th-century Romanesque parish church that was demolished to accommodate the new building. The design was the work of Bolognese architect Antonio Serra. The grand facade features a portico supported by eight Corinthian columns and bears the Latin inscription "DIVO MARINO PATRONO ET LIBERTATIS AUCTORI," honoring Saint Marinus as the patron and founder of liberty. Inside the basilica, underneath the high altar, lies a sacred urn containing the relics of Saint Marinus, discovered during the excavation of the old church. The interior is divided into three naves and is decorated with significant artworks, including a prominent statue of Saint Marinus by Adamo Tadolini. The basilica remains the heart of spiritual and civic life in San Marino, especially during the annual national festival on September 3rd.
