The City of San Marino is the capital of the Republic of San Marino, the world's oldest surviving republic, dramatically perched on the slopes of Monte Titano. According to tradition, the settlement was founded in 301 AD by Saint Marinus, a stonemason seeking refuge from the Christian persecutions of Emperor Diocletian. The historic center is enclosed by massive medieval walls and retains its authentic character with narrow winding streets and ancient stone buildings. In 2008, the city and Monte Titano were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognized as an exceptional example of a free medieval commune. Key landmarks include the three defensive towers, the Palazzo Pubblico, and the Basilica di San Marino, which holds the relics of the patron saint. Despite its small population of around 4,000, the city attracts millions of visitors annually for its rich history and remarkable views. Its elevated position has panoramic vistas stretching across the Emilia-Romagna region to the Adriatic coast.
