American billionaire Elon Musk shared images of the Slănic Prahova Salt Mine on X, comparing the underground galleries to the legendary "Mines of Moria". His reaction sparked massive international interest, providing unprecedented global promotion for this tourist destination in Prahova County.
Slănic, often referred to as Slănic Prahova, is a renowned health resort in the Subcarpathian region of Prahova County, famous worldwide for its massive rock salt deposits. The town is home to the Unirea Salt Mine, one of the largest in Europe, located at a depth of 208 meters and consisting of 14 gigantic cathedral-like chambers with a constant temperature of 12 degrees Celsius. The mine serves both as a major tourist attraction and a medical center for treating respiratory conditions through saline aerosol therapy. In addition to the underground mine, the town features unique natural monuments such as the Salt Mountain and several saline lakes formed over collapsed old mines, most notably Baia Baciului and Baia Verde. The history of the town as a modern spa center began in the mid-19th century. Today, Slănic remains a major point of interest on the Romanian map, seamlessly combining its industrial heritage with natural curative resources in a serene hilly landscape.
