Grădiștea is located in the northernmost part of Ilfov County, on the border with Ialomița County, and is traversed by the Ialomița River. The commune consists of the villages of Grădiștea and Sitaru. The settlement is primarily known for the Căldărușani Monastery, one of the most significant Orthodox monasteries in Romania, founded in the 17th century by Prince Matei Basarab. The monastery is situated on a peninsula within Căldărușani Lake and houses a valuable collection of ecclesiastical art, including works by the painter Nicolae Grigorescu. The region is characterized by a vast, flat agricultural landscape, broken up by the lake and surrounding ancient forests. The tranquility and isolation make Grădiștea an important spiritual and cultural hub. In recent years, the area has also developed as a destination for ecotourism and birdwatching, as the lake serves as a vital ecosystem for many rare species.
