The Vărătec Mountains (Munții Vărătec) are a volcanic mountain range in northern Romania, belonging to the Vihorlat-Gutin volcanic arc. Geologically, these mountains were formed approximately 9 to 12 million years ago during intense volcanic activity, resulting in hard andesite and dacite rock formations. The region is well-known for its dense beech and spruce forests as well as significant deposits of precious metals like gold and silver, which have been mined here for centuries. Historically, the Vărătec range played a central role in the mining industry of Maramureș, particularly around the towns of Cavnic and Băiuț. The highest peaks reach elevations over 1300 meters, offering expansive views over the Maramureș Depression and the Lăpuș Land. The flora is rich in endemic species, and the secluded valleys provide habitat for wolves, bears, and wild boar. Culturally, the mountains are shaped by the traditions of the local population, closely tied to the forest and mining heritage. Today, the range is a destination for ecotourism, featuring numerous marked trails for nature enthusiasts.
