💡 Tips
- You must wear hiking boots with good grip. The trail through the gorge is rocky, slippery, and involves crossing suspension bridges.
- To avoid the biggest crowds, visit on a weekday or start your hike very early in the morning on a weekend.
- There are two main entrances. The entrance from the Turda side is more popular and has more facilities, but the entrance from Petreștii de Jos is often quieter.
- The trail through the gorge is relatively short (1.5-2 hours one way), but plan extra time to admire the views and take photos. The return is on the same path.
- Check local weather forecasts before you visit. During heavy rain, the trail can become dangerous and slippery, with a risk of falling rocks.
🍽 Food
Try a fresh, warm chimney cake from the stalls near the main entrance. It's the well-suited sweet snack after a hike.
Another popular Hungarian street food, often available at the stalls. This deep-fried dough is usually served with garlic, sour cream, and cheese.
Look for the grill (grătar) stands serving mici (skinless grilled minced meat rolls). It's a classic Romanian outdoor snack.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
In the nearby villages like Petreștii de Jos or Săndulești, locals often sell homemade honey and traditional cheese (brânză) directly from their homes.
At the main entrance near Turda, you will find several stalls selling magnets, postcards, and handcrafted wooden items depicting the gorge.
Hike the marked trails above the gorge's rim (Circuitul de deasupra Cheilor). They offer sweeping views and are far less crowded than the main path below.
Enter the gorge at sunrise. You will have the trail almost to yourself and experience the quiet and sounds of nature without the usual crowds.
Walk away from the main entrance area by following the Hășdate stream downstream. It's a peaceful walk along the water, away from the main hiking trail.

Cheile Turzii (Turda Gorge) is a striking natural reserve in Cluj County, located about 6 km from the city of Turda. Carved over millions of years by the Hășdat stream into Jurassic limestone, the gorge stretches for nearly 3 kilometers. Its vertical cliffs reach heights of up to 300 meters and house over 80 caves, including those used as shelters since prehistoric times. A well-marked trail runs along the stream, crossing several suspension bridges that offer thrilling views of the narrow canyon. The gorge is a premier destination for rock climbers, featuring hundreds of routes for all skill levels. Botanists prize the area for its immense biodiversity, with over 1,000 plant species recorded, including rare ice-age relics like the Turda wild onion. Local legend claims the gorge split open to save King Saint Ladislaus from his pursuers. A visit here is perfectly paired with the nearby Turda Salt Mine, creating a full day of exploration.
