Colțești Fortress (Romania)

Weather…

Colțești Fortress (also known as Thoroczkai Castle) is a spectacular ruin located in the Trascău Mountains of Alba County. It was built at the end of the 13th century, around 1296, by the Thoroczkai noble family as a defensive measure against Mongolian raids. Perched on a jagged limestone cliff, the fortress occupies a strategic position overlooking the village of Colțești and the entire Rimetea Valley. The architecture consists of two massive towers connected by enclosure walls, with the northern tower serving as a residential keep. In 1703, during Rákóczi's War of Independence, Austrian troops destroyed the fortress, and it has remained in ruins ever since. Today, the site is a popular destination for hikers, offering a dramatic contrast to the rolling hills of the Transylvanian countryside. The ruins are freely accessible, allowing visitors to explore medieval military architecture up close. The panoramic view from the summit towards Piatra Secuiului mountain is one of the most photographed landscapes in the region.
