Ocna Mureș is a town in Alba County, Transylvania, situated on the banks of the Mureș River. Its name literally means 'Salt Mine on the Mureș,' reflecting its thousand-year history of salt extraction that dates back to the Roman castrum of Salinae. For centuries, Ocna Mureș was one of the primary sources of salt for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The late 19th century saw the establishment of a major chemical plant by the Solvay group, which dominated the town's economy for over a hundred years, producing soda ash and sodium bicarbonate. The town has faced unique geological challenges due to its location directly above salt domes; significant cavern collapses have occurred over the decades, most notably in 2010 when part of the central commercial district was swallowed by a sinkhole. Despite these setbacks, the town is currently undergoing a renaissance centered on balneology. A state-of-the-art spa complex was recently opened to utilize the therapeutic saline waters, aiming to transform Ocna Mureș into a premier wellness destination in central Romania.
