Căpâlna Fortress (Romania)

Weather…

The Dacian fortress of Căpâlna is a strategically vital archaeological site in the Orăștie Mountains and a member of the UNESCO World Heritage list. It was constructed in the 1st century BC on a 510-meter-high hill, functioning as a key component of the defensive ring surrounding the Dacian capital, Sarmizegetusa Regia. The fortress was designed to control access through the Sebeș Valley and featured massive stone walls built using the Murus Dacicus technique. Excavations within the walls have revealed a tower-house and various storage and residential structures that yielded significant ceramics and jewelry. During the Dacian Wars, the site was besieged and eventually destroyed by Roman legions in 106 AD. Today, the ruins provide deep insight into the advanced military architecture of the Dacians before the Roman conquest. Reaching the site involves a hike, but it rewards visitors with an evocative historical atmosphere and expansive views of the surrounding Transylvanian mountain landscape.
