Câlnic Fortified Church (Romania)

Weather…

Câlnic Fortress, located in Alba County, is a remarkable architectural complex and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. Unlike the more common Saxon fortified churches, Câlnic originated in the 13th century as a private noble residence for the Graf Chyl de Kelling family. In 1430, the fortress was sold to the local Saxon community, who converted it into a communal refuge by building a second ring of walls and adding food storage rooms for use during sieges. The heart of the complex is the massive 'Siegfried' donjon, a residential keep that stands as a symbol of medieval strength. Within the courtyard lies a 15th-century Gothic chapel adorned with 16th-century murals. The fortress is celebrated today for its unique transition from a feudal manor to a collective defense system, offering visitors a clear view into the social and military history of medieval Transylvania.
