Detunata Flocoasa is the higher twin of the famous Detunata Goala, reaching an altitude of 1258 meters in the Metaliferi Mountains. Its name, which translates to shaggy or fuzzy, is derived from the thick spruce forests that cover nearly the entire peak, concealing the basaltic structures beneath. Despite the dense vegetation, the mountain shares the same volcanic origin as its neighbor, featuring impressive columnar basalt formations created by Neogene magmatic cooling. This forest cover provides a unique microclimate that supports a rich diversity of mosses, ferns, and other shade-loving plants at the base of the cliffs. Hiking to the summit of Detunata Flocoasa provides a more secluded and wild experience compared to the more accessible and bare Detunata Goala. The area is part of a larger protected natural complex intended to preserve both the unique geological features and the surrounding forest ecosystems. For scientists, the contrast between the two peaks serves as an excellent case study in how vegetation affects the visibility and weathering of volcanic landforms.

Getting there

Access starts from the small town of Bucium, following village paths that wind up into the surrounding hills. This forested basalt peak is slightly less frequented than its bare twin nearby.

Spring through autumn is handy, allowing visitors to enjoy the dense, quiet woods that shroud the stones. Winter visits are possible but can be tedious if the snow on the approach trails is unbroken.

The trails lead through a mature forest that grows directly over ancient volcanic rock formations. The ground is often a mix of soft soil and hidden, moss-covered basalt blocks that require careful steps.

Footwear with excellent grip is crucial, as the damp, mossy rocks under the canopy can be incredibly slick. Bug spray is highly recommended in summer due to the thick vegetation and humidity.
