Vidigueira Castle (Portugal)

Weather…

The Castelo de Vidigueira, located in the town of the same name in the Beja district, is inextricably linked to the history of the famous explorer Vasco da Gama. The original fortress was built in the 15th century and served as the residence for the first Count of Vidigueira, a title Vasco da Gama received in 1519 from King Manuel I. Of the castle's former splendor, the prominent keep (Torre de Menagem) is the primary structure remaining today, serving as an excellent example of late Gothic and Manueline architecture. The square tower structure is adorned with ornate battlements and windows that reflect the wealth of the da Gama family. Over the centuries, the complex underwent several modifications as defensive aspects increasingly gave way to residential functions. Today, the restored tower houses a museum dedicated to local history and the legacy of the great Portuguese voyages of discovery.
