Valadares Palace
The Valadares Palace is situated in the historic center of Lisbon at Largo do Caldas and stands atop the remains of the ancient Roman city wall, known as the Cerca Velha. Following the devastating earthquake of 1755, the building was reconstructed in the Pombaline style, preserving the structural rationality and architectural features typical of that era. The palace facade is characterized by neoclassical lines and a rigorous symmetry that reflect the reconstruction efforts post-catastrophe. During the 19th century, the palace served as a residence for noble families before being dedicated to various public purposes in the 20th century. Today, the building houses the Gil Vicente secondary school, thereby integrating the historical structure into modern educational daily life. The interior courtyard and the archaeological layers beneath the building make it a significant witness to Lisbon's urban development from antiquity to the present day.
