Tarouca is a historic town in the Viseu District, profoundly linked to the foundation of Portugal and the Cistercian Order. It is home to the Monastery of São João de Tarouca, established in 1140 as the first Cistercian monastery on the Iberian Peninsula, which served as a major spiritual and intellectual hub for centuries. The town is situated in the Varosa River valley, an area famed for its terraced landscapes and the production of premium sparkling wines. One of the most remarkable architectural landmarks is the fortified bridge of Ucanha, featuring a massive tower that once functioned as a toll gate and defensive outpost. Tarouca was granted its charter by King Afonso III in 1262, cementing its local importance. The surrounding terrain is characterized by granite peaks and vineyards belonging to the Távora-Varosa wine region. Today, Tarouca remains a vital destination for religious tourism, offering visitors a glimpse into the medieval heritage and natural serenity of the Beira Alta province.
