The Serra da Estrela Plateau is the highest section of the largest mountain range in mainland Portugal, peaking at 1993 meters at Torre. This extensive high plateau is geologically part of the Central System (Sistema Central) and consists primarily of granite formations shaped by Quaternary glaciations. The landscape is defined by glacial features such as the Zêzere Glacial Valley, which at 13 kilometers long is one of the largest in Europe. Due to its elevation, the plateau experiences an alpine microclimate with regular winter snowfall, hosting Portugal's only ski resort. It serves as the headwaters for major rivers including the Mondego and the Zêzere. Economically, the region is famed for its traditional sheep farming and the production of the renowned Queijo da Serra cheese (DOP). The Natural Park, established in 1976, protects a unique array of flora, including endemic species like gentians and junipers, as well as rare birds of prey.

The high plateau is directly accessible via the spectacular N339 mountain road, which winds up from Covilhã or Manteigas and leads drivers straight into the heart of the massif.

Late spring and early autumn are generally the most rewarding times for hiking, while winter attracts visitors primarily seeking the rare Portuguese snowfall and icy landscapes.

The environment consists of expansive, exposed rock formations and alpine meadows, offering a mix of relatively flat walks across the plateau and highly challenging boulder scrambles.
