Castro Marim (Portugal)

Weather…

Castro Marim is one of the most historically significant towns in the eastern Algarve. Strategically positioned on a hill overlooking the Guadiana River, it served as the first headquarters for the Order of Christ, the successors to the Knights Templar in Portugal. The massive medieval castle (Castelo de Castro Marim) provides a striking 360-degree view across the border into Spain, over the river, and across the Sapal de Castro Marim Nature Reserve. On the opposite hill stands the star-shaped 17th-century Fort of São Sebastião, built during the Restoration Wars. Located between these two defensive giants is the pleasant town center with its traditional whitewashed homes. The surrounding area is famous for its salt pans (salinas), where high-quality 'Flor de Sal' is still harvested by hand using age-old techniques. The nearby wetlands are a haven for birdwatchers, frequently hosting flamingos and storks. Every August, the town steps back into the 14th century during the 'Dias Medievais' (Medieval Days), featuring knightly tournaments, craft markets, and period-inspired banquets. Local cuisine draws from both the river and the nearby sea, with grilled fish and game meats being popular choices. Castro Marim is for history buffs and nature enthusiasts looking to experience a quieter, more authentic side of the Algarve.
