Penafiel is a tradition-rich city in the Porto District, originally known by the name Arrifana de Sousa. It was granted city status in 1770 by King Joseph I and renamed Penafiel in honor of the monarch. The city is a key stop on the Romanesque Route, featuring significant monuments from that architectural era. The townscape is dominated by the imposing Sameiro Sanctuary, located on a hilltop that provides sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. Economically, Penafiel is known for its agriculture, viticulture, and its role as a regional commercial hub. Culturally, the Museum of Penafiel stands out, having been awarded as one of the best museums in the country. Every year, the religious festival of Corpo de Deus attracts thousands of visitors. Today, Penafiel is a modern city that combines its historical importance with a growing industrial base and a high quality of life.
