Serra de Valongo (Portugal)

Weather…

Serra de Valongo is a mountain range in northern Portugal, part of the Porto metropolitan area. Its highest point is Monte Crasto at 702 meters. The range is composed primarily of Paleozoic schists and greywackes, with significant slate deposits that have been quarried historically. Roman gold mining operations are evidenced by archaeological remains, including tunnels and processing sites. The area is designated as a protected landscape under the Parque das Serras do Porto, established in 2012. The climate is Atlantic, with mild temperatures and high precipitation averaging 1,200 mm annually. Vegetation includes mixed forests of oak and pine, with Mediterranean scrub. The range provides green space for Porto's urban population, with numerous hiking and cycling trails. Nearby towns include Valongo (population ~10,000) and Ermesinde. The geology is of particular interest for studying the Variscan orogeny and Ordovician fossils.
