The range is composed primarily of Paleozoic schists and greywackes, with significant slate deposits that have been quarried historically. Roman gold mining operations are evidenced by archaeological remains, including tunnels and processing sites. The area is designated as a protected landscape under the Parque das Serras do Porto, established in 2012. The climate is Atlantic, with mild temperatures and high precipitation averaging 1,200 mm annually. Vegetation includes mixed forests of oak and pine, with Mediterranean scrub. The range provides green space for Porto's urban population, with numerous hiking and cycling trails. Nearby towns include Valongo (population ~10,000) and Ermesinde. Conveniently located very close to Porto, this range of hills can be reached quickly by car or by taking local commuter trains directly to the neighboring smaller towns.

The trails often lead through rocky, uneven terrain marked heavily by the remnants of old slate mining operations and deep, steep river valleys that cut through the region.

Footwear with excellent grip is essential due to the slippery slate rocks, and bringing a flashlight might be useful if you plan to carefully peer into the old mine entrances.
