Monsaraz Castle (Portugal)

Weather…

Monsaraz Castle is a medieval fortification located in the Alentejo region, perched on a dominant hill overlooking the Guadiana River. The castle was reconstructed in the 14th century during the reign of King Dinis, following the final reconquest of the territory from the Moors. Due to its strategic position near the Spanish border, Monsaraz served as a vital defensive post for the Portuguese kingdom for several centuries. The local architecture is characterized by the extensive use of schist and granite, giving the entire fortified village a unique and cohesive aesthetic. From the castle's battlements, visitors can enjoy expansive views of the Alqueva reservoir, which is currently the largest man-made lake in Western Europe. Today, the complex is a protected national monument and stands as one of the best-preserved examples of medieval military engineering in Portugal.
